Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe United Generations Between Rock Fans

Marking 20 years since the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, offering players everywhere the tools to feel like a rock star. Not in reality, but try convincing anyone who has mastered the epic lengthy guitar solo before a packed crowd of friends.

Developed by Harmonix, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the display in time with the music. Every sequence mimicked specific notes, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio had already experimented in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, which was acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable series which made a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists featured, introducing classic bands to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the early budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – despite the fact initial releases mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. But once the game took off, and record sales and radio play increased, everyone wanted to participate.”

He adds: “Among the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the music they loved. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act had Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon remembers how the series brought classic rock to the forefront: “The game offered a bigger, new demographic. Typically this had been seen as outdated material, but then when it was included in the title young people discovered it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised it, and got rid of the outdated label. It gave our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the band's first record remained unreleased in the US, so the game was a key medium for exposure for the band during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew had on the song on the tour bus, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Titles Enduring Influence

Music's biggest acts soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in dedicated spin-off titles that focused on their music collections and related stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the band more money than any of their studio albums. It moved well over 500,000 copies upon release, while sales of their songs rose of up to 40% during an era when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality completed a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through the game – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with similar gameplay but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone played at double speed and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated requiring nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero offers a, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should use actual weapons and go to war,” says DragonForce guitarist the artist.

The band previously wrapped up a successful tour before their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it made them a household name. “I remember our distributors informing us that our records were moving rapidly,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it risked overshadow everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has their own musical journey and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon on the stage. Since the beginning, the creators believed humans have a natural urge to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games were released in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, featuring derivative titles like the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Titles like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the community active, with expectations of a new product from the original publisher in development. A new studio has begun production on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed such titles might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant new music that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. There’s no reason for it to continue with new generations.”
